South Africa: programmes planned for “Youth Month” |
Information hubs including mini exhibitions and workshops on available opportunities for the youth will be among the activities lined up for this year’s Youth Month…The youth development month programme seeks to achieve the social mobilisation and cohesion of young people in society.
It also seeks to educate current youth generation about the relevance of 16 June and ensure youth access to information for career planning and economic participation.
The Youth Commission said they will be sending a special call to the youth of South Africa to take ownership of their development by actively participating in further entrenching democracy and the values enshrined in the constitution as well as to push the boundaries of progress achieved in the 14 years of democracy.
The hubs will be hosted under various themes by different departments.
The Department of Arts and Culture will host “Youth and Social Cohesion”, while the Department of Trade and Industry will host “Youth and Economic Participation” and the Department of Health will host “Youth Health and Wellbeing” among others.
In an attempt to promote soccer as a tool for youth development, the Commission has partnered with a German company GTZ German Technical Cooperation (Youth Development through football) to inspire and encourage the youth of South Africa to strive for excellence in sport in a quest for a better tomorrow.
This will see the inclusion of a series of soccer games whose focus will be on life skills development focusing on various themes.
The youth pledge seminar will convene on 10 June 2008 where the NYC together with the youth leadership will take time to review the youth pledge as unveiled by the Education Minister, Naledi Pandor.
Through partnership with the Flemish government, on 14 June 2008 they will be a launch of an Arts and Culture program that engages young people in a series of skills development programmes.
